Script draft

Step
Scene Heading
Shot
Subject
Description
1
EXT – Planet’s surface
Low angle extreme wide shot
Establishing shot of planet.
The animation starts with a rocket landing on an unfamiliar planet. It falls through the clouds and touches down on the dusty ground.
Pan
Pan up to show rocket.
High angle over the shoulder
Rocket approaching the surface.
Very wide shot
Rocket standing on planet.
2
EXT – Landing site
Mid shot
Robot being lowered from rocket.
We then see the boot up sequence for the robot, starting as a first person shot and transitioning out to show it detaching from the lander.
Point of view
Boot up sequence of robot followed by its visual sensors turning on.
Wide shot
Robot adjusting to its body.
Cut away
Robot looks to rocket as equipment panel opens up.
3
EXT – Landing site
Point of view
HUD of robot showing building instructions for greenhouse.
The next scene is the robot building a hydroponics dome, cut into 3 parts. There’s a few seconds where it’s accessing the instructions, a shot of it about 1/3 build and a final bit with it closing the door as it is fully built.
Low angle
Robot figuring out how to slot together 2 poles.
Over the shoulder
Fitting a transparent panel to the greenhouse frame
Mid shot
Robot closing the doors on the constructed greenhouse.
4
INT – Rocket compartment
Point of view
View through the telescope looking up into space.
It’s now night-time and we see the robot looking through some form of telescope attached to the lander.
Medium close up
Robot sighs as it detaches from the telescope.
Close up
Robot looks forlornly up at the stars.
5
INT - Greenhouse
Mid shot
Robot examining packet of seeds
In the next scene we see the robot planting a mixture of seeds inside the dome.
Wide shot
Robot planting seeds in a line across the frame.
Full shot
Shot of the greenhouse with plants starting to sprout inside.
6
EXT - Landing site
INT – Greenhouse
INT – Rocket compartment
To be decided
To be decided
There is then a time-lapse showing the plants growing inside and then outside of the dome. This is interspersed with shorter scenes with the telescope. This scene will show that over a long period of time it grows a variety of plants to make the planet/area habitable. Due to a love/fascination with mankind coded into it, the robot watches the skies each night, eagerly waiting the day humans come to settle the home it has built for them.
7
EXT – Landing site
Point of view
Boot up sequence with some error flags.
As time passes the robot visibly ages, worn down by the environment it is creating. Decades after it first touched down the robot goes out to tend the plants when it sees a light descending into the forest.
Low angle extreme wide shot
Mirrors the first shot but with the robot limping in the foreground. Panning up a speck of light descends as the robot watches.
8
EXT - Forest
Close up
Robot realises what is going on and immediately rushes towards it.
On rusted joints it hobbles towards the light. In a clearing, sits a gleaming spaceship.
Cut in
Shot of the robots legs struggling to keep pace. After a few seconds the robot trips on a root.
Mid shot
Robot pulls itself up creaking and continues.
Over the shoulder
Robot parts branches to a clearing.
9
EXT - Forest
Low angle wide shot
Side on view of the robot approaching the ship before falling down.
As the robot approaches its battered systems start to fail. It falls down in the grass, its last sight being a group of humans coming down the ship’s ramp.
Point of view shot
View of the robot looking up at the ship with static filling up the screen. It then black with an error message before that too stops.

This is the current outline of the script. I have thought of almost all of the visuals and camera angles apart from scene 6. This has to show a large amount of time passing however I am not sure whether to us montage editing or show it as a time lapse, or how to present it. I am reformatting this into a proper script and starting to story board this but I will come back to that section when I can.

Scrip to screen project ideas

Character: Robot
Setting: Greenhouse
Prop: Telescope

1) A robot is working in a greenhouse but wishes to see more of the world. At some point they either find or assemble a telescope and use it to look out of the greenhouse windows. It might be looking at other planets/stars, or it might be able to see trees or mountains in the distance. Enamored by what it sees it forms a plan to escape (maybe even using the telescope to start a fire?).
I don’t quite know how I would end this story. It depends whether or not the robot escaping is a good payoff but this idea seems a bit simple at the moment.

2) As part of an interplanetary colonization program a robot is sent of to a distant world to set up a suitable environment for humans. The animation would start as the robot lands on the surface and starts setting up the equipment. Over a long period of time it grows a variety of plants to make the planet/area habitable. Due to a love/fascination with mankind coded into it the robot watches the skies each night, eagerly waiting the day humans come to settle the home it has built for them
As time passes the robot visibly ages, worn down by the environment it is creating. Decades after it first touched down the robot goes out to tend the plants when it sees a light descending into the forest. On rusted joints it hobbles to where the light landed where, in a clearing, sits a gleaming spaceship. As the robot approaches it’s battered systems start to fail. It falls down in the grass, it’s last sight being a group of humans coming down the ship’s ramp.

3) An old inventor has built a robot to tend to his large greenhouse but doesn’t provide it the means to leave. One day the inventor’s grandson visits and catches a glimpse of the robot out of his window. He brings out his telescope and leans out of the window to get a proper look. Noticing the light glinting off of the telescope the robot looks towards the house, adjusting its lenses to get a better view. They both see each other and the child waves. After a pause the robot awkwardly waves back.
They go on for a little while exchanging messages (possibly holding up signs). Then, the child disappears from the window. He checks to see if his grandfather is busy and sneaks out the house. He runs down to the greenhouse and opens the heavy door. The robot is beside itself with excitement, sliding back and forth on it’s tracks. They play together for a while, the robot giving him a rid around the greenhouse. Soon however it’s the afternoon and the child has to go home. They say goodbye and the robot watches the car leave.

Script to screen: loose concept art

Most of the sketch work I have done for the Script to screen project.

Script

INT. SPACE SHIP
POV - ALIEN - FOCUS
The scene starts with alarms going off for a second while the screen is still black. The borders retreat to the edge of the screen, like someone opening their eyes. The camera looks left and right a different panels and screens. There is a red light blinking and there is a planet very close by to the left. There a parts of the ship that look organic. one of the displays reads "Warp interrupted" and another "Entering atmosphere".
EYE LEVEL - INSIDE SHIP
We can see the alien finish waking up and grow increasingly panicked, her forehead starting to pale. She grabs the controls but they are shaking violently. A low groan sounds and the alien shouts in response.
MEDIUM SHOT - CAMERA 1 - PAN
We see the exterior of the ship with the alien in the cockpit. The ship has clear organic features such as eyes and skin, but clearly fused with large mechanical parts. It is starting to heat up as it starts entering the atmosphere. The camera slows down and stops showing the ship shoot towards the surface trailing flames.
POV - ALIEN - FOLLOW
The ship is rapidly approaching the surface, trying to steer to the only visible land. With a roar the ship starts crackling with faint purple energy. This seems slow it down a bit but not enough. The screen blacks out as the ship hits the ground.

EXT. ISLAND
HIGH ANGLE - CAMERA 1 - CRANE
The alien wakes up on a beach. Groggy at first but then gets her bearings. She gets up and rushes to the crashed ship. It appears intact.
OVER THE SHOULDER - CAMERA 2 - FOLLOW
As the alien stumbles around to the side of the ship we see it has been impaled by some strange plant.
LOW ANGLE - CAMERA 2 - TRACKING
The alien rushes to the ship's side and collapses beside it, her forehead going blueish. she comforts the ship as it dies, resting a hand on it. With a groan a compartment opens revealing a white and purple egg. The ship dies and the Alien, clearly distraught huddles over it. After a bit she looks up at the egg.

EXT. ISLAND CENTER
LONG SHOT - CAMERA 1 - STATIC
The Alien drags the egg to a small clearing next to a large rock.
THE BIRD'S EYE VIEW - CAMERA 1 - AERIAL
The alien is detaching the mechanical components of the dead ship from the organic part. There is a neat pile of them to one side.
LOW ANGLE - CAMERA 2 - TRACKING
We see the alien climbing one of the otherworldly looking trees, breaking leaves and sticks off of it. She hangs off of a stem, breaking a giant leaf off as she falls to the ground.
MEDIUM SHOT - CAMERA 1 - STATIC
The Alien is using the sticks and leaves to create a makeshift shelter. As she steps back it slumps a little but stays up.

EXT. ISLAND CENTER
LONG SHOT - CAMERA 1 - STATIC
The sky is starting to get darker and there is an audible wind picking up.
LOW ANGLE - CAMERA 2 - STATIC
The egg takes up most of the foreground and is shivering. After a second the Alien notices it and starts to create a fire.
MEDIUM SHOT - CAMERA 2 - TRACKING
The alien gathers together some wood and tinder. After intense concentration a purple spark leaps from the alien's finger, setting light to the wood. As the Alien builds up the fire something hisses behind her.
The Alien stands up and turns around, as camera pans up it reveal a smallish bird-like quadruped. It hisses again, some of the feathers on it's neck standing up.
Thinking quickly the Alien grabs a stick from the fire that's burning at one end. Her forehead is almost glowing red. She waves it at the creature and it backs off a little. Then, snarling, the creature tries to dash to the egg. The alien lunges to intercept it and the screen goes black.

EXT. ISLAND CENTER
LONG SHOT - CAMERA 1 - STATIC
It is night time now and the alien is sitting by the fire with the egg next to her. She is holding a stick over the fire with some meat skewered on it.
MEDIUM SHOT - CAMERA 1 - TRACKING
We see the alien making a pile of leaves in the shelter as the fire dies down in the background. She then drags the egg inside the shelter.
HIGH ANGLE - CAMERA 2 - STATIC
The alien curls up on top of the leaf pile, brushing some on top of her.
LONG SHOT - CAMERA 1 - STATIC
We get a full view of the clearing with the fire embers glowing in the middle and the shelter off to one side. There is a gentle breeze blowing and a small moon is glowing brightly. The screen fades to black over a couple of seconds.

EXT. ISLAND CENTER
CU - CAMERA 2 - FOCUS
There is a feint sound on cracking while the screen is still dark. We then get a close up of the Aliens face just as she opens her eyes. A louder crack sounds and she looks to the side.
LOW ANGLE - CAMERA 2 - FOCUS
A close up view of the egg shows it cracking, with glowing purple liquid leaking out. The Alien Kneels down next to it, wiping off some of the liquid. A large piece of shell on the top comes off.
OVER THE SHOULDER - CAMERA 1 - STATIC

The head of a small reptilian slug creature peaks out of the shell. It bears a clear resemblance to the ship, without the machinery bolted on. The Alien carefully picks it up out of the shell, as her forehead starts glowing a sunny yellow. The screen fades to black as she is holding the little ship up.

Step outline

Scene 1 - Space  10s
The Alien wakes up from stasis to find her ship damaged and descending towards a nearby planet. Alarms are ringing and the ship is grumbling.

Scene 2 - Crash  15s
The ship plummets through the atmosphere as the alien tries to steer towards land. (I am not sure if I want the Alien to do it, or she blacked out and the ship does it for her) The screen goes black as it impacts the ground.

Scene 3 - Death  25s
The Alien staggers out of the ship, coughing from the smoke leaking out from the console. Turning around she notices a large gash in the ship’s side. She comforts the dying spacecraft as it uses its last moments to eject it’s “egg” (A clone of the ship’s organic half, stored in stasis in some form of egg. This is normally hatched when the original nears the end of its lifespan)
After the ship dies the Alien holds the egg.

Scene 4 - Gathering supplies  10s
The Alien unattaching the machinery from the dead ship and piling it together. Then collecting wood and long grass.

Scene 5 - Make shelter  10s
Constructing a shelter to provide shade from the sun.

Scene 6 - Fishing  5s
The alien is standing in the water looking for fish. After a second or two she darts forward catching one. Maybe a later shot of her walking back up the beach with a few.

Scene 7 - Fire  15s
As it gets darker a storm rolls in. The Alien rushes to cover the egg and protect it from the cold. As it starts noticeably shivering She runs off and drags over the ship’s battery and by sparking some wires near the wood she builds a fire.

Scene 8 - Night time 5s
End the day with a wide shot of the island camp with the fire dying down.

Scene 9 - Morning 20s
The alien wakes up to the sound of the egg cracking. As she kneels down beside it, the egg breaks down the middle, revealing a creature very similar to the ship but much smaller. The scene fades to black as the alien picks up the tiny ship.

Logline

An alien in her organic pet like ship crashes on a desert island. After the ship dies the Alien must protect it's "backup", until it hatches and they can both escape the island together.

Again the wording of this could change but I think I'll stick with this story if I can.

The premise of my story

A stranded alien has lost her best friend and must care for it's child until they can escape.

I'll probably think of a better version of this but here it is for now.

Relevant words for soundscape pictures

Just a collection of my thoughts as I first got the pictures.

Story ideas

1) Spaceship crashes on desert island and alien has to care for egg until it hatches.
2) Same as 1, but the ship was organic and the egg grows into a new ship.
3) Alien explorer goes to desert island, finds the egg and tries to take it back for study.
4) The whole island is a Kraken egg and starts to hatch when the alien sets foot on it.
5) A cartoonish story where an alien finds an egg tries to break it open in various ways.
6) An alien on the run has fled to a desert island with the egg

Character, setting and prop of story

Alien

Desert island

Egg

Off the top of my head I'm thinking of a story where an alien is marooned on a desert island and has to take care of an egg until it hatches. However there are other possibilities so i'll wait until I've got at least a few developed ideas before going down one route.
